MacBook Pro + HP Thunderbolt G4 Dock = Multiple Displays

Ha! I’ll bet you thought this blog was dead.

Well, it was almost dead, but isn’t anymore (hopefully).

Today I’m going to talk about how to use a HP Thunderbolt G4 dock with a M4 Pro Macbook Pro laptop to get multiple displays to work.

My employer provided me with the aforementioned dock with my work laptop.

I wanted to be able to use the dock with my new MacBook Pro (MBP) but was struggling to get multiple monitors working.

Every time I connected the MBP to the dock, the two monitors connected to the dock always showed the same things (they were mirroring each other).

I tried connecting the monitors to different ports on the back of the dock, but nothing seemed to work.

I finally found a post on Reddit that gave me the clue I needed.

Back of HP TB G4

I had to plug one of the monitors into the regular display connectors (display port or HDMI) and one of them into the Thunderbolt port.

I kept making the mistake of plugging the USB C to HDMI adapter into the USB C port on the left side. The Thunderbolt port was on the right side.

After I connected to the TB port, two monitors appeared in my MBP’s display configuration and I was able to adjust the arrangement.

Too be honest, I hadn’t even noticed the port before, let alone that it was a Thunderbolt port.

Suffice it to say, I’m pleased with the results.
